Yes, canola is gmo. I think it may even have been the first. Canola was naturally genetically modified (through several generations of breeding) at first. Then Monsanto gmo'd it chemically to withstand Roundup (which kills everything that isn't gmo'd), so farmers could plant canola and just spray roundup and then harvest their canola. To me, the scary part isn't the gmo, it's the fact that almost all canola has been treated with roundup.
Anyway, at first farmers paid big money for Monsanto canola, as it made their lives much easier. Since it was chemically gmo, monsanto had(has?) a patent, and if someone had monsanto canola in their fields without buying it from monsanto, monsanto sued. (Totally unfair, since farmers can't always help what gets blown in with the wind). Since farmers couldn't keep monsanto seeds out of their fields, and since they were being sued to have it in, most farmers who grew canola went to gmo. And that's how a monopoly is born.
There's a line at the end of "the truck got stuck" song by Corb Lund band that says "Agriculture Canada is definitely going to be looking for us." since in the song they dumped a bag of gmo canola to get their truck unstuck.
Love and laughter,
Lily
